From the abattoirs of Victorian England, to a classroom in Leningrad, to the Holocaust to Brecht’s bed, Theatre Asylum produces thought provoking contemporary theatre by and about women and Jewish identity from the inter/national repertoire.
The name was chosen for its dual meaning; an asylum as a place of madness, danger, and the unexpected, and also one of refuge, trust and process.
Our approach emphasizes research and dramaturgy and an image-driven, physical staging style. Theatre Asylum is the sole company in Canada dedicated to premièring international women’s drama, while also developing new Canadian plays.
Equal representation for women in all areas of theatrical activity is practiced. The company publishes a program booklet to accompany each production to raise awareness about the writer and the play. We are a federally registered charity, members of the Professional Assoc. of Canadian Theatres, Toronto Theatre Alliance, Assoc. for Jewish Theatre.
