From Africa to Cuba to Europe, award-winning Theatre Asylum premieres thought-provoking contemporary theatre by and about women and humanist issues from the inter/national repertoire, and is an outstanding company in the translation and production of Canadian plays abroad.
The name was chosen for its dual meaning; an asylum as a place of madness, danger, and the unexpected, and also one of refuge, trust and process. Our approach emphasizes research and dramaturgy and an image-driven and physical staging style. Equal representation for women is practiced. The company has developed new Canadian plays from first draft to touring productions, and publishes a program booklet to accompany each production to raise awareness about the writer and the play. For five years our sister company was ISÔKO RWANDA.
