Sonia Uwimbabazi

Acting Ensemble

Sonia is one of the young stars of the Rwanda Cinema Centre, where she started acting in films by chance while still at university. But after her first film, knew she had found her calling. Cinema is still finding its feet in Rwanda, and Sonia is proud to contribute to its growth. Her first role was the lead in Isugi, which has been screened internationally, and tells the story of an orphan 10 years after the genocide. In 2006 she played the leading role in Hey Mr. DJ by Ayub Kasasa Mago for PSI, examining AIDS in the young urban population, and 2007 brought her another lead role in the British film We Are All Rwandansby Debs Gardner, also screened internationally.

In 2007 Sonia performed for the first time onstage in Littoral the National University of Rwanda, and in 2008 in The Monument on tour in Rwanda with ISÔKO . She found theatre very enriching, and quickly added new skills to her repertoire. Sonia thinks that as there is little cinema and theatre in Rwanda, they are deeply appreciated, especially judging from the audiences who attend them. She knows that the Rwandan people are thirsty for more.
